“Buffalo Calf Road Woman.”
Buffalo Calf Road Woman of the Northern Cheyenne people. She saved her wounded warrior brother, Chief Comes in Sight, inspiring and helping the Cheyenne warriors to win the battle. She fought next to her husband in the Battle of the Little Bighorn and is credited with striking the blow that knocked Custer off his horse before he died.
The warriors in these paintings were spiritual leaders of their people. I have portrayed them in the way European Renaissance painters would portray their spiritual leaders with halos around their heads. Since the American Indians believe we are all connected to all living things I used natural skies for halos.
