Kicking Bear of the Lakotah people. A Medicine Man and Ghost Dancer he also fought at the Little Big Horn. He and Short Bull taught the ritual of the Ghost Dance to the Sioux Nation. He delivered a persuasive speech assuring and sealing their belief in the power of the dance. This non-violent movement and the fear it generated for the U.S. Military led to the Wounded Knee Massacre.
The warriors in these paintings were spiritual leaders of their people. I have portrayed them in the way European Renaissance painters would portray their spiritual leaders with halos around their heads. Since the American Indians believe we are all connected to all living things I used natural skies for halos.
